Arusha, often referred to as the “Gateway to Tanzania’s Northern Circuit,” is a vibrant city situated at the foot of Mount Meru, where urban energy meets wild landscapes. It’s the perfect starting point for some of Tanzania’s most iconic destinations, including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro. But Arusha is more than just a transit hub—it’s a destination in its own right, offering a mix of natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance.
Arusha is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak (that can be seen from various parts of the city), and Arusha National Park, known for its diverse wildlife, crater lakes, and luscious forests. Due to its elevation, the city enjoys mild climate making it a pleasant place to explore year-round.
Arusha is a melting pot of cultures, home to a mix of Tanzanian ethnic groups, including the Maasai, Meru, and Chagga, as well as a growing international community. The city’s markets, such as the Central Market and Maasai Market, are vibrant places to experience local life, shop for crafts, and sample fresh produce.
Arusha’s history dates back to the late 19th century when it was established as a German colonial outpost. The Germans built a fort (the Old Boma) and used the area as an administrative center. After World War I, the region came under British rule, and Arusha continued to grow as a trading and agricultural hub.
In 1967, the city gained international attention when Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president, signed here the Arusha Declaration, outlining the principles of Ujamaa (African socialism). Arusha also became a center for international diplomacy, hosting the Arusha Accords in 1993, which aimed to bring peace to neighboring Rwanda.
